Central-pharmacy automation is a family of large, heavy, utility-hungry machines that store, count, package, and compound medications with far less human touch than a manual pharmacy. For the building team they behave less like furniture and more like installed equipment — each device drives structural, electrical, data, environmental, and (for compounding robots) cleanroom requirements that must be designed in early, because the cost and disruption of retrofitting them after the slab is poured or the cleanroom is certified is severe.

What the automation family includes

The "automation" in a modern central pharmacy is not one machine but a stack of devices, each addressing a different step in the medication-use process. Understanding the distinctions matters because they live in different rooms, draw different utilities, and carry different code consequences.

Carousels and vertical lift modules

Carousels and VLMs are the workhorses of high-volume central pharmacies. They compress a large inventory into a small footprint by storing medications in rotating bins (horizontal or vertical carousels) or in trays that a lift mechanism delivers to a pick window (VLMs). Software directs the operator with light bars and screen prompts, and bar-code scanning closes the loop on accuracy.

Robotic dispensing systems

A dispensing robot stores unit-dose medications in a controlled matrix and uses a robotic arm with bar-code verification to assemble cart-fill batches and individual orders. It removes a large share of manual picking and is a strong diversion- and error-reduction control, but it is a substantial installed asset.
