The audiovisual (AV), digital signage, and public-address (PA) layer is the set of low-voltage systems that move pictures, sound, and the spoken word through a hospital — from the conference-room display and the OR video-integration platform to the lobby wayfinding kiosk, the patient-room interactive TV, the code-blue overhead page, and the mass-notification announcement that has to reach every occupant in seconds. These systems sit on the structured-cabling and network backbone and increasingly run as software on the converged IP network, but they carry their own design rules, code obligations, and life-safety stakes that make them a distinct discipline from nurse call, security, and the data-center core.
AV / signage / PA is a broad family. The boundaries that matter for design and procurement:
A recurring integration question is where one system ends and another begins — for example, an overhead "Code Blue, Room 4" announcement may originate in the nurse-call system, be brokered by clinical middleware, and be voiced through the public-address amplifiers. That hand-off is owned jointly, and the design must name the responsible system at each link so no announcement falls between vendors.
AV/signage/PA is not heavily code-driven the way fire alarm or medical gas is, except where it intersects life safety, accessibility, and emergency communication — and there it is governed tightly.

The single most consequential point: any emergency communication, voice evacuation, or mass-notification function is a fire-alarm/life-safety system under NFPA 72 — not a "PA system" — and inherits that code's listing, survivability, power, and acceptance-testing regime. General music/paging is not, but the two often share speakers and zones, which forces careful design so that an emergency message always overrides background audio with correct priority.
Hospitals run several overlapping audio-distribution needs, and good design separates them by priority and zone rather than running one undifferentiated "PA."
